The”Luminous Mysteries” of Pope John Paul II

In 2002 Pope John Paul II introduced the 5 decades of the Mysteries of Light, recalling Jesus’ public life from birth till his death. We meditate on these Luminous Mysteries on Thursdays.

The 5 Luminous Mysteries are:

The Baptism of Jesus - Jesus was baptised by John in the River Jordan. After the baptism, the sky opened up and Jesus was emersed in light. Then a voice was heard from heaven saying, “This is my son, whom I love; With him I am well pleased.”

The Wedding of Cana - On the third day of the wedding of Cana in Galilee Jesus turned water into wine at the request of His Mother. This miracle convinced his disciples to follow him and revealed his glory.

The proclamation of the Kingdom of God - Jesus ministered in Galilee where he said, “The time has come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!”

The transfiguration of Jesus - Jesus took Peter, John and James up Mt. Tabor with him to pray. As they prayed, Jesus’ face changed and his robes emitted a bright light, and Moses and Elijah appeared. They spoke to Jesus of his coming departure. A cloud appeared and enveloped them all, then a voice said, “This is my son, whom I have chosen; Listen to him.”

The Last Supper and Holy Eucharist - Jesus offers bread he has just blessed to his disciples saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it around saying, “this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for all for the forgiveness of sins.”

The Mysteries of the Rosary

Praying the rosary nourishes your relationship with God and the Holy Mother Mary.

Ruminating on the mysteries daily keeps your faith in the forefront of your mind, as it should be, as all of your thoughts and actions everyday should be done with the Word of God in mind. Many look to the Lord for comfort during trying times but the word of God is meant to be lived. Let every word from your mouth be lit by the light of Jesus Christ and with every action allow The Father to do his good works through you.

When praying the Rosary, Wednesday and Sunday the Glorious Mysteries are meditated upon.

Here are the 5 Glorious Mysteries:

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ—As Mary and Mary Magdalene arrived at the sepulcher, an angel appeared to them and said, “Fear not ye! For I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here. For he has risen, as he said.” (Matthew 28, 1-6)

The Ascension of Jesus Christ—Jesus appeared before the apostles and said, “Peace to you” The apostles became frightened, believing that they were seeing a ghost. Jesus saw this and answered, “Why are ye troubled? And wherefore do reasonings come up in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that I am he, handle me and see, because a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me having.” He then showed them his hands and feet. “And, lo, I do send the promise of my Father upon you, but ye—abide ye in the city of Jerusalem till ye be clothed with power from on high.” Jesus then led the apostles to Bethany, blessed them and ascended to Heaven to sit at the right hand of his Father. (Quotes from Luke 24, 36-51)

The Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost—And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Act2, 1-4)

The Assumption of the blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven—The blessed joining of Mary with her divine son in Heaven.

The Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth—There appeared a great sign in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Rev 12, 1)

The 5 Joyful Mysteries are:

When Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced:”Hail Mary, full of Grace. The lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.” Announcing that God had chosen her to bear the savior.

The Visitation:

It is said that when Mary visited her pregnant cousin Elizabeth that Elizabeth’s unborn child (John the Baptist) leapt in her womb as Mary (pregnant with Jesus) came near.

The Nativity:

We all know this story. Jesus, born in a manger in Bethlehem and wrapped in swaddling clothing.

The Presentation of the Lord:

Joseph and Mary bring Jesus to the temple to present him to God. A dove was sacrificed at his offering (as was commen at that time when the family couldn’t afford a lamb)

The Finding in the Temple:

When Jesus was 12 yrs old, his parents took him to the Passover Feast at the Temple. There he stayed with the elders asking questions. Joseph and Mary finally found Jesus still in the temple after 3 days.
