St. Christopher is said to have helped travelers ford a dangerous river by carrying them on his back. One story goes that he came to carry a child across the river; perched on Christopher's back, the child grew heavier as they crossed the waterway.

When he had reached the other side, St. Christopher asked the child "Who are you that placed me in such peril? It seems I was carrying the whole world on my shoulders."
