In 1830 in Paris, France, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Laboure and showed her a vision. What she saw was an image of a Miraculous Medal, both front and back. As the Virgin Mary showed her the medal, she spoke, saying "All who wear them will receive great graces."

The back features an "M", surmounted by a cross, with two hearts. The front features these words around it: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
